Metal delivery to Medicago truncatula nodules requires not only of metal transporters, but also of a plethora of small chelating molecules that maintain metal solubility in plant fluids. In this paper by Vivi, Isidro and friends from labs in Spain, France, and USA, we show that the synthesis of nicotianamine, one of these chelating molecules, is needed for efficient metal delivery to nodules. This work indicates that metal-nicotianamine transporters will be also involved in symbiotic nitrogen fixation.
